MASTER SHOTS

This week's assignment for Aice Media Studies was to film 5 master shot chips, including contrast, parallelism, symbolism, leitmotif, and simultaneity.

First was leitmotif, a recurrent theme throughout a musical or literary composition, associated with a particular person, idea, or situation. Before filming we came up with the idea of having a knocking sound as the repeated signature sound. The sound is diagetic meaning the audience is hearing what the characters are hearing in real time.

The next master shot was symbolism, a literary device that refers to the use of symbols in a literary work. We shot a clip of a close up of our hands making a heart and then we revealed another shot with one of our characters dead with blood on her chest. This scene represents friendships are as vital to our well-being as a human heart is and it can also represent how devastating losing a close relationship with someone can be. The heartbeat in the clip could be considered both dietetic and non-diegetic based on the interpretation.

Next, we did a contrast master shot. For this scene, we filmed two shots that were entirely different vibes, one of them being one character sitting down meditating with music and the other being a character breaking into a house. The audio for the breaking-in clips was non diegetic and for the meditation scene, it was dietetic because the character was listening to that music.

Parallelism was the next shot, which refers to the use of recurring motifs or thematic elements that resonate with the audience. In this shot, we have a younger character listening to a song with headphones in surrounded by stuffed animals. The clip then fades to a similar one, except the character is older, the character has newer headphones and has fewer stuffed animals. This shot represents maturing, however, the character still listens to the song they were listening to as a child, referencing back to their youth. The audio is diegetic.

Lastly, we shot our simultaneity shot. In this shot, we had two characters waking up and getting ready. This is simultaneity because the events are happening simultaneously. We used a voiceover for the sound to emphasize that the characters are getting ready at the same time.
